About the Brotherhood

The Monastery of the Glorious Ascension is a monastic community of the Diocese of New York and Eastern America of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia ( ROCOR) under the immediate supervision of His Grace, The Most Reverend GABRIEL, Bishop of Manhatten.

Our Abbot and Spiritual Father is the Right Reverend Archimandrite Damian, the founder of the Monastery. The Community was established in 1977 when Father Damian and several others were received into the Orthodox Church, on the Feast of the Holy Transfiguration, by Bishop Dmitri of Dallas ( of the Metropolia). The group had been in the Episcopal Church, but as that group became more modernistic and liberal in the late seventies, these men sought refuge in the stablity of the One True Church. After many years of struggle to learn and live by the Holy Tradition passed down to us by the Holy Fathers, the Brotherhood was received into the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia,by Vladyka GABRIEL on Nov.9th,1997 at the Southern Orthodox Conference , held at the Joy of All Who Sorrows Church, in Alpaharetta, Georgia. The Brotherhood now continues its struggles within the firm spiritual home of the Church Abroad.

The Monastery

The Monastery is set on 43 acres of wooded land in north western Georgia, near the small town of Resaca. (see directions)The Brotherhood is small ( currently 4 monks and one novice) and makes its living by making and selling hand-dipped beeswax candles and other items ( see Monastery Products) as well as donations from the Faithful(see St.Nicholas Fellowship). The Brotherhood continues a full cycle of Liturgical worship, with Divine Liturgy served on Saturday and Sunday, as well as most major feast days (see Service Schedule)We are also developing a liturgical wine for sale ( with the particular needs of the Orthodox Liturgy in mind) and will in the near future, be constructing a Visitor's and Retreat Centre on the Monastery grounds. We also have on the monastery property an Orthodox cemetary, Holy Resurrection Cemetery.
